Ferries from France
From France you cross to Algeria from Marseille and from Sète. Both ports are well connected by the French motorway network, and crossings mostly run overnight, so you arrive rested in North Africa.
Marseille is the main French port for Algeria traffic. Corsica Linea connects the city with Algiers. Marseille sits on the A7 and A55 motorways and is easy to reach from across Europe.
Sète, around 200 kilometres west of Marseille on the A9 motorway, is the quieter alternative. From here GNV sails to Algiers and to Béjaïa in eastern Algeria.
Ferries from Spain
Several connections to Algeria run from Spain's Mediterranean coast. The ports lie along the AP-7 and A-7 motorways that follow the coastline.
Barcelona is linked to the European motorway network via the French A9 and the Spanish AP-7. Balearia sails from here to Algiers and to Oran.
Valencia offers a Balearia connection to Mostaganem on Algeria's west coast.
Almería in southern Spain has the shortest crossings on the network. Naviera Armas sails from here to Ghazaouet and to Oran, both good starting points for western Algeria.
On board: cabin, vehicle and pets
Crossings to Algeria are mostly longer voyages. For the overnight ferries from France, a cabin is recommended; restaurants and lounge areas are available on board. The car deck is closed during the crossing, so bring everything you need into the cabin beforehand.

Entry, visa and customs
Algeria is outside the EU, so border formalities are the more important part of planning. Most travellers need a visa, applied for in person at your nearest Algerian embassy or consulate before departure, ideally at least four weeks ahead. Your passport must be valid for at least six months on entry; a national ID card is not sufficient.
You bring your vehicle in temporarily and must be able to prove you re-export it within three months. Insurance valid for Algeria is compulsory.
