Ferries from France
From France you cross to Algeria from Marseille and from Sète. Both ports are well connected by the French motorway network, and most crossings run overnight, so you arrive in North Africa well rested.
Marseille is the most important French port for traffic to Algeria. Corsica Linea connects the city with Algiers. Marseille sits on the A7 and A55 motorways and is also easy to reach from the rest of Europe by road.
Sète, around 200 kilometres west of Marseille on the A9 motorway, is the quieter alternative. From here GNV sails to Algiers and to Béjaïa in eastern Algeria.
Ferries from Spain
Several connections to Algeria run from the Spanish Mediterranean coast. The ports lie on the AP-7 or A-7 motorway along the coast.
Barcelona is linked to the European motorway network via the French A9 and the Spanish AP-7. Baleària sails from here to Algiers and to Oran.
Valencia offers a Baleària connection to Mostaganem on the western Algerian coast.
Almería in southern Spain has the shortest crossings on the network. Naviera Armas sails from here to Ghazaouet and to Oran, both good starting points for the west of Algeria.
On board: cabin, vehicle and pet
The connections to Algeria are mostly longer crossings. For the overnight ferries from France, a cabin is worth booking; on board you'll find restaurants and lounge areas. The car deck is closed during the crossing, so take everything you need with you into the cabin beforehand.

Entry, visa and customs
Algeria is not part of the EU, which makes border formalities the more important part of your planning. Travellers from most European countries need a visa, which you apply for in person at the Algerian embassy or consulate in your home country beforehand, ideally at least four weeks before departure. Your passport must still be valid for at least six months on arrival; a national ID card is not enough.
You bring your vehicle in on a temporary basis and must be able to prove you have taken it out again within three months. Insurance valid for Algeria is compulsory.
