About Baleària
Baleària is a Spanish ferry company based in Dénia on the Costa Blanca. Founded in June 1998 by 16 partners with 126 employees, the company remains 100 percent Spanish-owned to this day; its president and sole shareholder is Adolfo Utor. With the takeover of Armas Trasmediterránea, Baleària became Spain's leading ferry group: over 50 ships, more than 40 routes across five countries, around 4,500 employees, roughly 6.5 million passengers and 1.6 million vehicles a year. The network connects the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla with the mainland; internationally, Baleària sails to Morocco and Algeria, and, under the Baleària Caribbean brand, between Florida and the Bahamas.
It has operated in Algeria since 2016 - initially with a weekly Valencia - Mostaganem connection, and now with routes from Valencia and Barcelona to Algiers and Oran.
Ships and fleet
Baleària combines fast ferries with conventional ferries and is a pioneer in LNG propulsion; twelve ships run on dual-fuel engines. On the Algeria routes the company mainly uses the Rosalind Franklin: space for over 2,000 people, twin and four-berth cabins inside and outside, VIP cabins, superior and standard seats, a self-service restaurant and cafeteria, prayer room, children's area, on-board shop, cinema and paid satellite WiFi. The Martín i Soler, the Bahama Mama and the Regina Báltica previously served Valencia - Mostaganem, among others.
Routes to Algeria
From Valencia, Baleària sails to Algiers (around 18.5 hours), to Oran (around 15 hours) and to Mostaganem (around 15.5 hours), each roughly once a week and overnight. From Barcelona, routes run to Algiers and - as a seasonal summer route - to Oran. Check the timetable for the exact departures.
Check-in, vehicles and pets
On the Algeria routes Baleària requires a long lead time at the port, as passport, customs and vehicle checks are handled before boarding - for Valencia - Oran the ferry company gives nine hours; the binding time for your booking is on the ticket. At check-in you need a valid passport and a visa applied for in advance, a national ID card is not accepted. Cars, motorbikes and motorhomes travel on all routes, give the dimensions when booking. Baleària does not list the Rosalind Franklin as a pet-friendly ship in its fleet overview - confirm bringing your pet with the ferry company before booking.
Tickets
Baleària sells tickets online and through customer service. The "Reducida" fare lets you cancel free of charge, and separate Algeria offers are available for summer.
